As an R&D (Research and Development) Senior Engineer, you will contribute significantly to technology and product development projects by identifying and implementing innovative solutions. This role supports ABB's Electrification Installation Products Division in Memphis, Tennessee. In this role you will be responsible for the non metallic boxes and fittings products. You will be part of the commercial essential products R&D team, with the goal of supporting one of ABB Electrification Installation Products core product brands Carlon. You will be responsible for providing technical support for design and development of new products, enhancement and sustainability activities of existing products, innovation and ideation activities and internal and external customer inquiries regarding your product line responsibilities.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop as the technical expert for assigned product line responsibilities. Those responsibilities include, but are not limited to, understanding the application and functionality of the products, understand national electric code requirements and agency certification standards, manage the development of new products and sustainment of existing products
  • Design high and low volume products utilizing manufacturing methods such as injection molding and extrusion, to a lesser extent metal stampings, machining and additive manufacturing
  • Perform design activities such as 3D modeling, dimensional tolerance analysis, Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), Design for Manufacturing (DFM), design verification, prototyping and product testing
  • Prepare engineering documentation including drawings, Bill of Material (BOM), material specifications, instruction sheets, quality control plans, technical data sheets
  • Provide project updates and deliver presentations as needed, both formally and informally
Your background

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Plastics Engineering with a minimum 5 years of related experience handling product design and sustaining activities, with emphasis in plastic part design
  • Sound knowledge and experience with project management and stage gate development process
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and 3D modeling software (Creo preferred)
  • Self motivated with a positive attitude toward achieving results
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills (English required)
  • Some travel (up to 10 percent) for customer visits, Voice of Customer (VOC), plant visits, trade shows
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
